KANAN ALEXANDER                  Travelling Street Photographer
I am Dutch born and grew up in Australia. My passion for photography grew out of a desire to record the rain-forest demonstrations in Northern NSW Australia in the early 70's.  I have lived in Several countries, including Malaysia, Uruguay, Spain and Holland.
This website weaves together my two life passions, photography and travel.

My idea for this web site was born when I was in Bolivia, photographing the old Indian women selling vegetables on the street. Here I developed a technique of shooting from the hip, as the Indians in general don’t like to be photographed.

In Europe I continued to develop my technique of street photography. In every country the people and their environments are different, and I try to capture what is unique about the people in the various countries I visit. I try to avoid posed portrait shots in order to capture the moment, before the subject realizes they are in the eye of the lens.

Currently I am using a Panasonic LX 7, with a retractable 14 – 45mm lens, which is compact and light enough to hang off my belt. It’s very fast to focus and great in low light (I almost never use flash). Out wide the lens aperture opens to 1.4. This gives me the ability to get those grabs a different camera might have left behind. Resolution is high enough to allow me to crop in where necessary. Needless to say my camera is my constant companion.

I hope you enjoy my pictures. I’d love to hear from you with any feedback via the contact form. All messages will be answered.

Of  course this web site will always be a work in progress, as I add images from the various countries I visit.

Update March 2015 - I have upgraded to the Canon G7x. This gives me a 4 times optical zoom, but more importantly it gives me a 1" sensor with a flip screen (useful when shooting from the hip). Vietnam is the first country where I have used the new Canon.
